Throwback Thursday :: Coming Soon

Things are really coming together here! This is still January of 2008 — getting to be just a couple of weeks before opening day.
Here I have the machine all set up in its little corner, and am busy winding off smaller cones of cotton while the shelves dry.
Here’s when I first started winding off the rayon. I remember my moment of panic when I realized that it took about half an hour to wind off a full pound of yarn as fine as 8400 YPP (hence the timer you see there). The entire premise of my business crumbled in front of my eyes as it occurred to me there might be no viable way to turn a profit, at that rate! About fifteen minutes later I realized that six strands together would take less than a sixth of the time, and heaved a sigh of relief. (I also later realized that coned yarn can come thicker than 8400 YPP, and that weavers who may actually only want the single strand seem perfectly happy to wait to have a gigantic quantity of it wound off. Who knew?!)
My “office.” Aside from a printer and a bunch of post-it notes all over the wall, it actually doesn’t look too different, six years later, and I’m proud to realize I’ve actually been running a successful business from a 15-square-foot box. (Hence my steadfast negotiations on the build-out of the office at Yarnia 2.0!) That thing on the floor is my foot pedal; I never took out a loan to open the store, but made extra cash moonlighting as a transcriptionist while I got it off the ground.
Big colorful shelves…filling up!
Scored a few more pieces of furniture off Craigslist!
She’s comin’ along!
